Der US-amerikanische Schriftsteller Paul Auster arbeitet auch als Regisseur, Kritiker, Herausgeber und Übersetzer. Auster hat jüdische Wurzeln, seine Grosseltern stammten aus Galizien, der Ukraine und Polen. Zusammen mit seiner Schwester Janet wuchs er im bildungsbürgerlichen Umfeld auf. Er ist verheiratet mit der Schriftstellerin Siri Hustvedt, die er bereits 1981 kennenlernte, und lebt in Brooklyn.
Bereits im Alter von 12 Jahren schrieb er Gedichte und Aufsätze. Der Vater seiner ersten Frau Lydia Davis, ein Englisch-Professor, brachte Auster auf französische Dichter. Er reiste nach Frankreich, Italien, Spanien und Irland, entdeckte seine Liebe zur Lyrik und schrieb Drehbücher für Stummfilme. Wieder zuhause, begann er mit dem Studium der Anglistik und Vergleichenden Literaturwissenschaft an der Columbia University. Auster arbeitete danach u.a. bei der New York Times, bekam einen Lehrauftrag an der Universtität und machte Übersetzungen.
Weltbekannt als Autor wurde Auster durch seine Detektivgeschichten, die als New-York-Trilogie im Jahr 1987 veröffentlicht wurden. Doch bereits vor dieser Zeit, ebenso wie danach veröffentlicht Auster zahlreiche Essays, Autobiografien, Lyriktitel und Romane. Ebenso erfolgreich ist er im Schreiben von Drehbüchern.
Für sein Werk erhielt er zahlreiche Auszeichnungen, z.B. den NEA Fellowship für Poesie, den Prix France Culture de Littérature Étrangère für New York Trilogie, den Independent Spirit Award für das beste Drehbuch-Debüt: Smoke und die Ehrendoktorwürde der Universität von Lüttich.
