Der Belletristik-Titel Die Kinder der Meerfrau ist eine eindrucksvolle historische Familiensaga aus dem 18. Jahrhundert. Die Erzählung beginnt mit dem Stranden zweier Brüder im Jahr 1725 in einer Bucht an der Ostseeküste. Obwohl die Einheimischen ihre Ankunft dort nicht gutheissen, beschliessen Ties und Momme, sich genau dort niederzulassen. Wenig später retten sie eine geheimnisvolle Frau aus den Fluten. Es entsteht eine Dreiecksbeziehung, die drei führen eine Ehe zu dritt ohne jegliche Eifersucht untereinander. Lena, die “Meerfrau”, bringt vier Kinder zur Welt (zwei Mädchen und zwei Jungen), wobei nicht klar ist, wer genau jeweils der Vater ist. Lena besitzt zudem eine rätselhafte Gabe, sie kann Menschen und Tiere heilen und besitzt das Zweite Gesicht. Da man befürchtet, sie könnte ihre Gabe auch negativ einsetzen, wird sie verdächtigt, eine Hexe zu sein.
Der Roman handelt aber hauptsächlich von den vier Kindern des Trios sowie wiederum deren Kinder, deren Charaktere ebenso unterschiedlich sind wie ihre Lebensgeschichten. Einer der Söhne landet als Walfänger auf einem Schiff, ein anderer als Plantagenbesitzer und Sklavenhalter in der Karibik. Der Autor Konrad Hansen schildert in seinem Roman sehr ausführlich, manchmal vielleicht zu detailverliebt, das Leben auf einem Walfänger sowie auf einer Plantage, die Geschichte des Sklavenhandels scheint ihm sehr am Herzen zu liegen. Als Leser wird man sowohl nach Grönland als auch in die Karibik entführt, durch die einfache, aber sehr bildhafte Sprache bekommt man ein sehr gutes Bild vom Leben der einfachen Leute zu jener Zeit. Unbedingt empfehlenswert, nicht nur für Fans des historischen Romans!
