In einem Londoner Auktionshaus wird eine Brosche aus der Art Déco-Epoche versteigert. Fast 70 Jahre nach ihrer Flucht aus Nazi-Deutschland erkennt Erika Rosenthal das Exponat als ein seit ihrer Flucht verloren geglaubtes Schmuckstück. Daraufhin beauftragt sie ihre Freundin Inspector Gemma James mit der Untersuchung der Herkunft der Brosche. Kurze Zeit später wird die Käuferin des Juwels ermordet aufgefunden.
Gemma zieht ihren Mann und Kollegen, Superintendent Duncan Kincaid, zu den Ermittlungen hinzu, als ein weiterer Mord geschieht. Nach und nach stoßen die beiden immer tiefer in die Familiengeschichte von Erika Rosenthal vor – eine Geschichte voller Verrat und Intrigen und um Erika’s vor Jahren ermordeten Ehemann David – und fördern ein dunkles Geheimnis zu tage.
Wen die Erinnerung trügt ist der bislang letzte Teil der erfolgreichen Serie um die Ermittler Gemma James und Duncan Kincaid von Deborah Crombie. Geschickt schafft sie es, die doch schwierige Thematik des Dritten Reich mit einer spannenden Kriminalgeschichte zu lesenswerter Belletristik zu verknüpfen. Crombie verzichtet auf die in dem Genre oft üblichen blutrünstigen Aufputschmittel. Vielmehr erzählt sie die Geschichte zweier symphatisch auf dem Boden gebliebenen Kriminalbeamten und ihrer privaten Probleme, die (ganz einfach) einen Fall aufklären. Einziger Wermutstropfen: das Buch fesselt einen derart, so dass es viel zu schnell zu Ende gelesen ist. Da bleibt nur die Vorfreude auf Band 13.
