Das Gesicht der WM 2010
Heute Nachmittag treten nach acht Jahren WM-Abstinenz die Kicker aus Südafrika wieder gegen das runde Leder. Anders als bei den bisherigen Teilnahmen 1998 und 2002 musste sich Bafana Bafana nicht für die Endrunde qualifizieren. Man stand bereits 2004 als erster Teilnehmer fest. Einer, der sehr großen Anteil daran hat, dass sich die FIFA einst in Zürich für Südafrika als Ausrichter entschied, ist für mich der eigentliche Star dieser Fußball-WM. Es kann sein, dass wir einen Gianluigi Buffon durch den Kasten fliegen sehen, einem Lionel Messi bei seinen Dribblings alá Maradona zuschauen dürfen, in den Genuss des brillanten Technikers Cristiano Ronaldo kommen oder Powertore eines Wayne Rooney bewundern werden, der Star der WM ist und bleibt Nelson Mandela.
Viele werden sich fragen, warum selbst ich als begnadeter Fußballfan dazu komme, den ehemaligen Staatspräsidenten als Held des Turniers darzustellen. Für all diejenigen empfehle ich „Mandelas Weg: Liebe, Mut, Verantwortung – Die Weisheit eines Lebens“ von Richard Stengel. Der langjährige Wegbereiter Mandelas schreibt über alle Stationen des Mannes, der eine Fußball-WM auf afrikanischem Boden überhaupt erst möglich machte. Mandela, der einen Traum hatte und jahrelang für diesen im Gefängnis saß. Mandela, der eine jahrelange Feindschaft zwischen Weißen und Schwarzen zumindest in großen Teilen beendete und sie zu einen wusste. Mandela, der dem Apartheid-Staat Südafrika ein international anerkanntes Gesicht verlieh und sich so ein Standing erarbeitete, welches ihm sogar erlaubt, Leute zu kritisieren, die ihn für seine Ansichten auszeichnen. Von George W. Bush erhielt der heute 91-Jährige einst die Presidential Medal of Freedom, ein Jahr später kritisierte er diesen heftig für seine Irakpolitik. Mandela ist eine Instanz, die von vielen bewundert wird und ein Mann, der mehr als jeder andere die Entwicklung auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent verkörpert.
