Sport hat eine unterhaltende Funktion, zumindest wenn er als Massenmedium an die Gesellschaft dringt. Andere, die sich wiederum selbst betätigen, sehen in Sport die Möglichkeit, sich selbst zu entfalten, ihre eigenen Grenzen kennenzulernen und sich einen nötigen Ausgleich für den tristen Alltag aufzubauen. Sport hat aber auch eine soziale Funktion, denn Sport hat immer ein Regelwerk. In einfacher Form wäre das beim Radfahren durch den Park die Regel, dass ich keinem anderen einfach so ins Hinterrad fahre. Ein wenig komplexer gestaltet sich das im Wettkampfsport, so darf ich beim Handball den Ball nicht mit dem Fuß, beim Fußball den Ball nicht mit der Hand spielen. Wer sich nicht daran hält, wird bestraft.
Der deutsche Autor Gunter Gebauer hat die soziale Komponente des Fußballs erkannt, er geht sogar noch ein Stück weiter. In „Poetik des Fußballs“ philosophiert er ein wenig über die Rolle, welche der beliebteste Mannschaftssport der Welt für unsere Gesellschaft trägt. Er dient nicht nur dazu, sich von Kreisklasse bis Nationalmannschaft in ein Team einzugliedern und mit anderen für ein gemeinsames Ziel zu kämpfen, sondern spiegelt auch wesentliche Verhaltensweisen aller anderen Menschen wieder. Auf dem Platz passieren genau die gleichen Dinge, wie sie auch im tagtäglichen Leben zum Begleiter geworden sind. Es geht um Gewinn und Verlust, um Ruhm und Ehre, teilweise um Geld und die Anpassung an ein Regelwerk. Es geht um Respekt und Unterordnung, Triumphe werden gefeiert, Niederlagen verarbeitet und auch bei Rückschlägen ist es wichtig, immer wieder aufzustehen, ob als Spieler auf dem Feld oder Mensch in der Gesellschaft.
