Bleibt es ein Turnier ohne Zwischenfälle, wird die Welt sagen, Südafrika ist sicher, Südafrika geht es gut und alles sei in bester Ordnung. Dass dies nicht der Fall ist, weiß Hans-Joachim Löwer. Der Mitarbeiter von National Geographic hat bereits an sozialen Projekten in Guatemala, Peru und eben Südafrika mitgewirkt. Seine Erfahrungen innerhalb des WM-Gastgeberlandes hat er im Werk „Mandelas schweres Erbe – Südafrika am Scheideweg“ zusammengetragen.
Immer wenn eine große Persönlichkeit abtritt, und Mandela war nicht nur innerhalb der südafrikanischen Grenzen ein ganz großer, hinterlässt sie eine Lücke, die nicht selten unausgefüllt bleibt. Anders als in den verherrlichenden Reiseberichten nimmt Löwer seine Beschreibungen aus direkten Kontakten mit Einheimischen, die im günstigsten Fall in Slums hausen. Er erzählt alles über die alltägliche Korruption, den Rassismus gegen Weiße und den Fremdenhass, der sich gegen die schwarze Bevölkerung richtet. Löwer spricht auch über die Folgen von zunehmender Umweltbelastungen und Aids. Neben viel Schatten zeigt er aber auch sozial engagierte Helfer, die alles dafür tun, um in den ärmsten Winkeln Südafrikas soziale Netzwerke aufzubauen.
