Es ist das Jahr 2027 in Russland. Der Gossudar ist Alleinherrscher und übt seine Macht mithilfe der Opritschniki aus, eine brutale Leibgarde ähnlich der Strukturen bei Iwan dem Schrecklichen im 16. Jahrhundert. Nur dass der Autor Sorokin in diesem sehr politischen Roman die Regierung Putin anprangert. Russland ist abgeschottet, lebt nur von Gas- und Ölexport, Handel wird nur noch mit China betrieben. Europa und die USA spielen hier keine Rolle mehr. Das Land ist von der Grossen Russischen Mauer umgeben, alle Intelektuellen bzw. Regimegegner sind geflüchtet bzw. werden nun Opfer grausamer Übergriffe durch die Opritschniki.
Sorokin schildert in seinem Werk einen Tag im Leben des Opritschnik Andrej. Der Tag besteht aus einer Hinrichtung, einer Auspeitschung, der Beschäftigung mit der unbeliebten Gemahlin des Gossudars und endet in einer dekadenten Orgie. Andrej glaubt fest an die Macht seines Herrschers, ebenso wie die übrige Elite, die dem Gossudar blind gehorcht, die Droge Macht entfaltet ihre volle Wirkung.
Der Roman Der Tag des Opritschniks ist eine erschreckend dunkle Utopie, erschreckend deshalb, weils sie in vielen Punkten dem heutigem Regime in Russland bereits sehr nahe kommt. Den Roman kann man durchaus als schwere Kost bezeichnen, aber auch als literarisches Meisterwerk. In Russland zeigten sich sowohl Anhänger des Präsidenten als auch Regimegegner begeistert von Sorokins Satire, jede Seite natürlich aus ihren Gründen.
“Der “Opritschnik” wurde zur Lieblingslektüre sowohl liberaler als auch patriotischer Intellektueller. Die Menschenrechtskämpferin Valeria Nowodworskaja und die Partylöwin Xenia Sobtschak zeigten sich gleichermaßen begeistert. Der Geschäftsmann Boris Beresowski, der vor Putin ins Londoner Exil geflüchtet war wie einst Fürst Kurbski vor Iwan dem Schrecklichen nach Litauen, empfahl in seinem jährlichen Internet-Sendschreiben an den Kremlherrn, Putin, den er nach alter Freundschaft als “Wolodja” anspricht, solle den “Opritschnik” unbedingt lesen. Im Umkreis des Präsidenten lobt man Sorokins Buch als “äußerst treffend”. Die Beamten ließen dem Schriftsteller ausrichten, der “Goida”-Ruf, mit dem man sich auf das Zerschmettern von Feinden einstimmt, sei ihnen unvergesslich. Vollends unheimlich war für Sorokin das Kompliment der Jugendorganisation der neuimperialen Eurasier, die den “Opritschnik” als prophetisches Werk begrüßten, das vorführt, was Russlands inneren Feinden blüht.” FAZ 9.12.2008
Der Tag des Opritschniks ist erhältlich als ePub-eBook und als Hörspiel (auch sehr empfehlenswert, da durch die Intonation der Inhalt teilweise besser rübergebracht wird).
