Im Roman “Die Bücherdiebin” wird die Geschichte des Mädchens Liesel Meminger erzählt. Es ist die Zeit des Zweiten Weltkrieges, das Kind hat seine Familie verloren und lebt nun bei Pflegeeltern. Hans und Rosa Hubermann haben die Kleine bei sich aufgenommen. Es sind gute Menschen und sie schliessen die Kleine in ihr Herz, auch wenn Pflegemutter Rosa manchmal etwas hart erscheint. Ungewöhnlich ist, das die Geschichte aus der Sicht des Todes erzählt wird. Dieser ist bereits müde von den vielen Toten des Krieges, als er Liesel begegnet. Er tritt als stiller Beobachter auf, der die Menschen nur teilweise versteht. Liesel und der Tod begegnen sich dreimal in ihrem Leben, jeweils an Wendepunkten – zum ersten Mal am Grab ihres Bruders. Rückblickend erzählt er die Geschichte des Mädchens, von ihrer Liebe zu Büchern, die sie manchmal geschenkt bekommt, manchmal stehlen muss, und manchmal vor den Nazis versteckt. Ebenso wie Max, ein jüdischer Junge, von Liesels Pflegeeltern im Haus versteckt wird. Es ist wohl die Liebe zu den Büchern, die der Tod an Liesel so liebenswert findet. Er ist in diesem Roman keine Schreckensgestalt und keineswegs böse, sondern hat eine Schwäche für Menschen, die gern lesen.
Alles in allem handelt es sich bei “Die Bücherdiebin” um ein sehr ergreifendes Buch, der Autor Zusak versteht es, die Geschichten rund um die traurigen Themen Krieg, Tod und Rassenhass wunderbar zu erzählen. Gleichzeitig kann man es auch als eindrucksvolle Verarbeitung eines dunklen Kapitels deutscher Geschichte sehen.
