Eine spannende Geschichte
Julius Cäsar ist sicherlich eine ganz besondere Persönlichkeit in der Weltgeschichte. In zahlreiche Romanen integriert, erfreute sich der wohl berühmteste Kaiser Roms nachhaltig einem sich immer wieder wandelnden Facettenreichtum. Cäsars Äußeres wurde meist, auch in den Hollywood-Blockbustern, ähnlich dargestellt, sein Schicksal weist jedoch über die Jahre so manche Änderung auf. Während unserer Schulzeit kommen wir schon nicht um Gaius Iulius vorbei, wird er uns doch dort zu Haufe als begnadeter Feldherr und Zerstörer der Römischen Republik dargestellt. In den Geschichten um den Gallier Asterix findet sich Cäsar des Öfteren großer Schmach ausgesetzt, zu wundersam waren die Mannen aus Gallien, zu lustig ihre Geschichten.
Kultautor Conn Iggulden zeigt uns ein wesentlich stärkeren Cäsar, einen der alles versucht, um seinen Einfluss zu wahren. Gerade erst hat er in „Imperator – Das Feld der Schwerter“ Mithridates und Spartacus besiegt und sich so zum mächtigsten Mann Roms aufgeschwungen, da ruft Kontrahent Pompeius die Tyrannei aus. Ohnehin hat der Imperator trotz seiner Erfolge ein großes Problem, denn die Aufgabe Gallien, die ursprünglich nur ein einfacher Eroberungszug werden sollte, erweist sich standhafter als zunächst angenommen. Wenn Cäsar die komplette Macht will, muss er Roms ältestes Gesetz brechen und mit seinen Truppen den Rubikon überqueren. Der Anfang einer atemberaubenden Geschichte, die mit erstaunlich guten Geschichtskenntnissen glänzt und mit einer richtigen Würze Spannung zum lesenswerten Stoff wird.
