Gillian Flynn wuchs in Kansas City, Missouri als Tochter zweier Professoren auf. Nach ihrem Bachelor in Englisch und Journalismus an der University of Kansas verließ sie den Mittleren Westen der USA um für zwei Jahre als Journalistin in Kalifornien tätig zu sein. Anschließend ging sie nach Chicago um einen Master in Journalismus zu absolvieren. Schließlich musste sie feststellen, dass sie für den eigentlich geplanten Beruf der Kriminalreporterin zu zart besaitet ist und entschloss sich ihre journalistische Ausbildung mit der seit ihrer Kindheit durch ihren Vater geprägten Leidenschaft für Filme zu kombinieren.
In den nächsten zehn Jahren war Flynn als Reporterin für die TV- und Filmzeitschrift Entertainment Weekly in New York tätig und berichtete von Filmsets aus der ganzen Welt. Die letzten vier Jahre ihrer Zeit bei Entertainment Weekly betätigte sich Gillian Flynn als Filmkritikerin, bevor sie 2006 mit ihrem Roman Cry Baby (Original: Sharp Objects) ihr weltweit gefeiertes Debüt als Schriftstellerin ablegte.
Cry Baby ist in über 20 Ländern erschienen und als bis dato einziges Buch innerhalb eines Jahres mit zwei Dagger Awards der renommierten britischen Crime Writers’ Association ausgezeichnet worden. Ihr zweites Buch, der Thriller Dark Places, ist 2009 bei Crown Publisher Group erschienen.
