Google Edition: Die Cloud kommt
Wie gestern berichtet, plant Google ein Programm für den Online-Direktvertrieb von eBooks einzuführen. Nach Informationen des Technologie-Blogs Cite lautet der Arbeitstitel des Projekts Google Edition.
Dan Clancy, seines Zeichens technischer Direktor bei Google Books, bestätigte nun die Gerüchte um das Engagement seines Arbeitgebers auf dem eBook-Markt während eines Vortrages im kalifornischen Mountain View.
Im Gegensatz zu Google’s bisherigem Vorhaben (die Digitalisierung ganzer Bibliotheken), das viele Titel mit abgelaufenem Kopierschutz beinhaltet die entsprechend kostenlos angeboten werden, ist der jüngste Vorstoß als Ambition für den Aufbau eines traghaften Geschäftsmodells zu verstehen. So machte Clancy auch deutlich, dass sich Google Books (was das Erscheinen der Bücher angeht) “um Vergangenes dreht”. Google Edition hingegen ist ein klarer Versuch den Vertriebsweg zukünftiger Buchverkäufe an sich zu binden und die Benutzung der digitalen Inhalte zu kontrollieren ohne dabei den stationären Buchhandel zu vernachlässigen, der laut Dan Clancy auch im digitalen Zeitalter eine nachhaltige Bedeutung haben wird, da viele Menschen auch weiterhin die Entscheidung für den Kauf eines (digitalen) Buches beim Stöbern im Laden treffen werden. Entsprechend soll es den Kunden möglich sein die Inhalte online, als auch in konventionellen Geschäften zu erwerben.
Clancy stützt seine Argumentation auf die feste Überzeugung, dass es bei den Menschen ein wachsendes Bedürfnis gibt, ihre digitalen Inhalte in einer Cloud zu speichern um den Zugriff auf diese in jeder Situation bei Bedarf zu ermöglichen. Ferner braucht es ein Vertrauen in den Anbieter, der die Cloud bereitstellt. Nach Ansicht von Clancy kann dies kein Startup oder kleiner Buchladen gewährleisten. Lediglich Google sei dazu in der Lage.
In Zukunft werden die meisten Buchneuerscheinungen mit der zeitgleichen Veröffentlichung einer digitalen Version einhergehen. Google deckt die sich auftuenden Möglichkeiten mit der Einbindung digitaler Bücher in eine Cloud, zusammen mit dem Vorhaben einer webbasierten One-Click-Lösung und der Kooperation mit dem stationären Buchhandel, perfekt ab.
