Sony’s Reader integrieren von Google digitalisierte Bücher
Wie die New York Times berichtet bietet Sony ab sofort die Google Library für die eigenen Reader an. Der Bestand von mehr als 1 Million Büchern umfasst Werke, deren Copyright-Schutz verjährt ist.
Im Rennen mit Amazon und anderen Wettbewerbern ist Sony’s Coup ein wichtiger Schritt um die Vorherrschaft auf dem noch sehr jungen Markt für elektronische Lesegeräte und Bücher. Letzte Woche verkündete der größte Buchhändler der USA, Barnes & Noble, einen eigenen Onlineshop für eBooks gründen zu wollen. In exklusiver Kooperation mit dem von der Branche heiß erwarteten Plastic Logic Reader sollte mit einem Angebot von über 700.000 eBooks der bis dato größte Onlineshop entstehen. Dieser Plan scheint nun ernsthaft gefährdet.
Freuen dürfte diese Entwicklung vor allem die Verlage und Leser. Während erstere zwar seit einiger Zeit vor der Bedrohung durch Google’s Digitalisierungs-Offensive warnen, wäre die marktbeherrschende Stellung eines einzigen Händlers, wie z.B. Apple’s iTunes im Musikgeschäft, noch weniger erwünscht, um nicht den Gefahren eines Lock-in-Effekts ausgesetzt zu sein. Die Leser, auf der anderen Seite, würden durch einen gesunden Wettbewerb zwischen den Anbietern wohl vor allem durch niedrigere Preise, freundlichere Nutzerbedingungen und schnellere Produktinnovationen profitieren.
