Die US-amerikanische Jugendbuchautorin Stephenie Meyer wurde 1973 als zweitältestes von sechs Kindern im US-Bundesstaat Connecticut geboren. Die ungewöhnliche Schreibweise ihres Vornamens verdankt sie ihrem Vater Stephen (Stephen+ie). Meyer studierte Englisch an der konfessionellen Mormonen-Universität Brigham Young University in Provo (Utah). Mit ihrem Mann und drei Söhnen lebt die Autorin in Phoenix, Arizona.
Bekannt wurde sie durch die Twilight-Tetralogie, der erste Band “Bis(s) zum Morgengrauen” (engl. Twilight) erschien 2005 und wurde ein internationaler Bestseller. Die (Liebes-)Geschichte zwischen Bella und dem Vampir Edward basiert nach eigenen Angaben der Autorin auf einem Traum, den Meyer im Jahr 2003 hatte. Der zweite Band “Bis(s) zur Mittagsstunde” (engl. New Moon) erschien im Jahr 2006 und hielt sich mehr als 30 Wochen auf Platz 1 der New York Times Bestseller-Liste. Der dritte Teil “Bis(s) zum Abendrot” (engl. Eclipse) folgte im Jahr 2007. Beide Titel waren ähnlich erfolgreich wie der erste Teil. Nach diesen drei sehr erfolgreichen Jugendbüchern schrieb Meyer ihren ersten Science-Fiction Roman für Erwachsene “The Host” (dt. Seelen). “The Host” stieg direkt auf Platz 1 der Bestseller-Listen der New York Times sowie des Wall Street Journal ein. Im Jahr 2008 wurde der vierte Teil der Bis(s)-Reihe, “Bis(s) zum Ende der Nacht” (engl. Breaking Dawn) veröffentlicht. Der Titel löste bei den Lesern ein gemischtes Echo aus. Nach Abschluss der Tetralogie arbeitete Meyer an einem weiteren Band, einer zweiten Version von “Bis(s) zum Morgengrauen” (engl. Midnight Sun) aus der Sicht von Edward, die anderen Teile waren zumeist Ich-Erzählungen aus der Sicht der Hauptdarstellerin Bella. Aufgrund des Verdachts illegaler Veröffentlichungen ihrer Manuskripte stellte die Autorin ihre Arbeit jedoch ein und veröffentlichte die Entwürfe frei auf ihrer Homepage.
Ihre Werke sind bei Little, Brown and Company – in Deutschland bei Carlsen – erschienen und inzwischen auch als eBook im ePub-Format auf den bekannten Plattformen erhältlich.
Die Verfilmung des ersten Teils „Twilight – Bis(s) zum Morgengrauen“ (unter der Regie von Catherine Hardwicke, in den Hauptrollen Robert Pattinson und Kristen Stewart) feierte am 21. November 2008 Premiere (in Deutschland am 15. Januar 2009) und landete prompt auf Platz 1 der Kino-Charts. Der zweite Teil (”New Moon”) soll Ende 2009 in die Kinos kommen.
