Wenn aus Geschwisterliebe Wahnsinn wird
Rechtsmediziner Dr. David Hunter führt ein wahrliches Workaholic-Leben. Mittlerweile lebt er mit seiner Freundin Jenny in London, doch zu sehen bekommt diese ihn nicht allzu oft. Nach einem Fall in Glasgow, wird Hunter auf die kleine Insel Runa gerufen, als er sich gerade im Flieger zurück in die Heimat befindet. Dort wurde ein Leiche entdeckt oder vielmehr ihre Überreste. Aufgrund eines verheerenden Zugunglücks sind keine Kräfte mehr verfügbar und so kommt Hunter der Bitte nach, den Fall anzunehmen.
Schnell wird klar, dass es sich bei dem Vorfall weder um Selbstmord, noch um einen Unfall handeln kann. Es war Mord. Auch die Identität der Toten wird schnell ausfindig gemacht. Was ungeklärt bleibt, ist der weitere Verlauf von „Kalte Asche“. Neue Vorfälle, weitere Morde und eine sich immer wieder weiter verwickelnde Handlung entstehen. Am Ende existiert so viel Verwirrung, die es einem Leser wirklich schwer machen kann, zu folgen. Dr. Hunter überführt eine eifersüchtige Schwester, die zur Serienmörderin wird und einen ehemaligen Ex-Polizisten, der seinen ganz eigenen Racheplan durchführen will. Erstere scheint bei einer gewaltigen Explosion ums Leben zu kommen, Zweiter nimmt sich später selbst das Leben. Am Ende ist es Dr. Hunter selbst, der an der eigenen Wohnungstür ein Messer in seinem Bauch spürt.
Wie es mit Dr. David Hunter weitergeht, erfährt der Leser in „Kalte Asche“ nicht, wer aber das Folgewerk „Leichenblässe“ von Simon Beckett gelesen hat, weiß es. Nichtsdestotrotz ist für mich die Mordszenerie auf der kleinen Insel Runa das gelungenste Werk des britischen Kultautors.
